🪓 How to Care for Your Sharpening Stone
Whether you’re using a Norton - India (oil) or Crystolon (water) stone, proper stone care is key to keeping your blades razor-sharp. Here's how to do it right:
pro tip*** never sharpen a dirty knife, fat in your stone will ruin it.
1. 🧼 Keep It Clean
After each use, rinse your stone with warm water.
-
For oil stones like the Norton India, a bit of light honing oil helps lift away metal filings.
-
For water stones like the Crystolon, a gentle scrub with a nylon brush will do the job.
2. 🧱 Flatten Regularly
Sharpening stones can develop uneven surfaces over time.
Use a flattening plate or a sheet of wet/dry sandpaper on a flat surface to level them out. This keeps contact consistent and sharpening effective.
3. 📦 Store It Properly
Always store your stone in a dry, clean area.
-
Oil stones: A light coat of oil before storage prevents drying or cracking.
-
Water stones: Ensure they’re completely dry before putting them away to avoid mould or warping.
4. 🧲 Use the Right Base
A stable base like Whetgrip keeps your stone firmly in place, protecting your work surface and making sharpening safer and more precise. No slipping, no cracking — just total control.
With a bit of routine care, both your sharpening stones and your blades will stay in prime condition. A well-cared-for stone means a sharper, safer, and more satisfying cutting experience — every time.
